Self Catering Holidays on The Isle of Barra | Reavers View.
'Reavers View' looks towards 'Weaver's / Reaver's Castle' on the Stack Islands just south of the Isle of Eriskay, it appears to resemble a slipper pointing South. It is one of the rings of forts surrounding the Isle of Barra, which allowed early discovery of any approach by sea.
From the house you can hear the sound of the corncrake, extinct in most of Britain, but alive and well here on Barra. Cille Bharra, the church of St. Barr, dates from the 12th century. One of the ruined Churches has been restored and contains the replica of of a unique grave slab which has Norse runic markings on one side and a Celtic cross on the other. The original is in the National Museum of Antiquities in Edinburgh.
The Author, Sir Compton MacKenzie, who brought us his novel 'Whisky Galore' is buried in the graveyard of Cille Bharra, while the wreck of the SS Politician ( aka, The Cabinet Minister ) on which the book, and subsequent Ealing film was based, lies sunken in 10 metres of water between the southern shore of South Uist and shore of Eriskay.
