What to do on The Isle of Barra
Castlebay is the largest township on Barra, and is named after Kisimul castle which stands on a rocky outcrop about 50 yrds from the shore. The castle was the stronghold of the MacNeil clan and was built in the tenth century. It is now owned by the Scottish Natural Heritage.
Heavel is the highest point in Barra (383 m) and on the slopes of the hill is ereceted an attarctive statue of the Madonna and child, a symbol of the Islanders faith.
There are many uninhabited islands around Barra, the most famous being Mingulay. Boat trips (weather permitting), operate from Castlebay between May and October. Mingulay rises 400 feet above sea level and is home to thousands of Puffins, Shags and countless other Sea birds.
